Black Clover Is Coming Back β Season 5 and Movie Updates That Every Fan Needs to See

Black Clover finished its original anime run in early 2021, signing off after 170 episodes with a message that more was coming. Then the Sword of the Wizard King movie arrived in 2023 on Netflix, which told an original story and reminded everyone why the series built such a large global audience. Now, with new anime material confirmed for the manga's final arc, Black Clover's return is one of the most anticipated events in the shonen calendar.
Where Did the Anime Leave Off?
The anime ended mid-story, covering up through approximately chapter 270 of Yuki Tabata's manga. At that point Asta had survived the Spade Kingdom invasion's early stages and unlocked Devil Union mode. The manga has since progressed through the full Spade Kingdom arc, a time skip, and into what appears to be its genuine endgame β a final confrontation involving the Paladins, Lucius Zogratis, and consequences that have been building across the entire series.
What the New Anime Will Cover
The return is expected to cover the Judgment Day arc and the final chapters of the series. This is high-stakes material β Tabata does not pull punches in the endgame. The power scaling reaches levels that will challenge even the show's most dedicated fans to keep up, but the emotional beats are earned. Characters who have been in the background for years get their moments.
Is It Worth Catching Up On?
Black Clover rewards patience. The first twenty or so episodes are rough β Asta's screaming became a genuine meme and the animation quality was inconsistent. But the series found its footing and built one of the more genuinely likeable protagonist-rival dynamics in recent shonen. Asta and Yuno's relationship carries the series in a way that makes even the filler episodes tolerable.
If you dropped it early and are reconsidering, starting from the Elf Resurrection arc (around episode 83) gives you a reasonable entry point into the story's more confident phase. But honestly, the full run is worth it for context.
The Global Fanbase Factor
Black Clover's audience is disproportionately large outside Japan. Netflix's involvement in the movie was a direct acknowledgment of how much the series has grown in North America, South America, and South Asia. The return of the anime will be a proper event β streaming platforms are paying attention.
