We have been writing some version of this article for years and we suspect we will be writing it for years more. Hunter x Hunter is the manga that famously refuses to either continue or end. Here is the honest June 2026 update.
Where the manga is right now
Yoshihiro Togashi resumed Hunter x Hunter in October 2022 after a four-year hiatus, releasing chapters 391 through 400 over the next several months. He then went on hiatus again in early 2023. Since then, he has been posting handwritten manuscript pages and rough drafts on his personal X (Twitter) account, with no consistent serialisation schedule.
The most recent batch of new material as of mid-2026 came in early 2025, when Togashi posted updates suggesting continued work on the Dark Continent arc. The story remains at the Succession War / Dark Continent crossroads, with no clear indication of when published chapters will resume in Weekly Shonen Jump.
Why is Togashi on hiatus again?
Two reasons, both consistently reported. The first is chronic back and health problems that make sustained drawing extremely painful. Togashi has been open about this in his social media posts. The second is the deliberate, intricate plotting style he uses for the Succession War arc, which involves dozens of characters and multiple parallel storylines that he is genuinely struggling to compress into chapter-sized chunks.
Anyone who tells you the hiatus is about laziness or that Togashi is "addicted to video games" is repeating a meme from a decade ago, not the current situation.
Is the anime coming back?
No, and there has been no official announcement suggesting otherwise. The 2011 Madhouse adaptation ended after the Chimera Ant and Election arcs in 2014, and there has been no second adaptation announced or rumoured beyond fan wishlists.
Realistically, no studio is going to start adapting the Succession War arc while the manga itself is mid-hiatus and incomplete. If the manga ever finishes, the conversation might change. Until then: no.
Our take
We genuinely believe Togashi wants to finish Hunter x Hunter. His Twitter updates are not the posts of a creator who has lost interest. But "wanting to finish" and "being physically able to finish on a Shonen Jump schedule" are different things, and the honest reading of the situation is that we will likely get more sporadic batches of chapters rather than a steady run.
That is not a tragedy. It is just the reality of an artist working at his own pace on a story he refuses to compromise. Read what is there. Re-read it. The Succession War arc, even in its current half-finished state, is some of the best plotting in the medium.
Frequently asked questions
Will Hunter x Hunter ever end?
Unknown. Togashi has said he wants to finish it. Whether that means publishing the final arc in Shonen Jump or releasing the story in some other form, no one outside his immediate circle knows.
